During new faculty induction and inservice days I have seen some really great TED talks and other inspiring videos. I wanted to share them with you so I will be sharing them in separate posts in the coming days and weeks. The first one I want to share is Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story We watched this TED talk during my first day of induction. I thought it was so powerful. Chimamanda Adichie states that if you "Show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again and that is what they become."  This video speaks to how if children do not see themselves in books or professions they do not see it as a possibility for them. This is so important as a school counselor to recognize. We have to be purposeful about the materials and resources we use with students. This is my #scday1 pic!  Since I started at my new position I have felt overwhelmed, but in a positive way. I have been overwhelmed by how welcoming the other staff members have been to me, not just at my school, but district wide. I have overwhelmed by faculty and staff member's level of caring about students, not just academically, but about students' personal and social well-being inside and outside of the classroom. I have been overwhelmed by how welcoming and accepting students have been to new students coming in to the school. I feel honored to be part of such a caring and welcoming school community! I started my new position on August 8th. This past week was the first week of school for students. I am beginning to feel like I am in the swing of things. Tagboard , "the social media hub for hashtags," is an amazing site that allows you to search hashtags for multiple social media sites even if you do not have any of the social media accounts!  It is a great way to get inspiration and to search multiple social media sites at one time. Tagboard allows you to organize anything that has a hashtag from various social media sites. Once you search for a hashtag, you can login to one of your social media sites to save your  tagboards  so you can easily look them up again later. I first shared  Tagboard  at the Technology Smackdown at the ASCA Conference in Philadelphia . I have since created various tagboards  related to school counseling. I thought it would be super cool to create a  tagboard  for the hashtag #scoffice to see pictures that school counselors have shared of the office as part of Get Connected for Back to School . Yesterday I was able to see my new office for the first time. This is what the office looked like when I first walked in.  A blank slate. I rearranged the furniture to give it a more open feel. I put my desk in the corner so that I could easily roll my chair around the room. I also like that it does not create a barrier between me and students and whoever else decides to come to my office. I also arranged all of the chairs at the small table.  This table will be perfect for small groups and individual meetings with students. There is also a large suite area outside. There is a conference room where I could hold group counseling sessions and a few other locations in the school where I could host larger programs. Before seeing my office I had a color scheme in mind. Now I am not so sure what I want to do. Sometimes you just need to see the space before coming up with any ideas.
